Building Opportunity on Main Street is an initiative intended to double the number of jobs created in Georgia’s Main Street and Better Hometown Communities through the active encouragement and better utilization of existing economic development resources provided by the programs and services of DCA and our partner organizations and agencies in participating Georgia Main Street and Better Hometown communities.
Georgia’s 100 Main Street Cities are vibrant centers for small business job creation, generating on average 3,200 net new downtown jobs since 2003, the equivalent of more than a KIA plant per year. Since 1980, over 47,000 jobs have been created in Georgia downtown Main Street districts with over $2.7B reinvested in cities under 50,000 in population. Much of this homegrown economic development has been made possible through the creative use of local investment and cutting-edge redevelopment financing tools.
In today’s tough economic climate, redevelopment partners must take advantage of all available tools for creating and preserving jobs, supporting small business development and keeping Georgia’s downtowns healthy.
This site compiles the top economic development financial tools available to ensure the success of downtown projects. Various federal, state, and local financing programs are highlighted which directly or indirectly benefit Georgia businesses or those businesses interested in making Georgia their home.
